Another year, another Fan Expo Vancouver to be deeply disappointed by. I know that I complained insistently last year, but they managed to draw me back this year. The quality of the guests, like Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Vincent D’Onofrio (Kingpin), and Peter Cullen (Optimum Prime), suggested that they were going to go really big this year and possibly try to fix the litany of issues plaguing previous years.
Well, all the people I mentioned above cancelled (as well as the Doctor Who companions and the voice of Megatron), and it looks like they put in even less effort this year than last year. For example, why is there still only ONE place for food for this many people?
The number one issue is that they sell far too many tickets for the available space. You can hardly move, and for someone like myself, it’s just not comfortable to browse around. This brings me to the quality of the booths, which were really a mixed bag this year. There are some outstanding local artists, though, and I bought a few really fun pieces this year to support them.
I won’t be going next year unless I read they’ve made capacity or layout changes. It’s just not worth it overall for the cost. If you love Fan Expo, then that is great. I am a believer that I am right that I don’t like it, and if you like it, then you’re also right. I desperately want it to be better, but I just don’t see it happening without a massive dip in attendance.
And I am still in awe of the work, dedication and love people put into their cosplaying. These people are a HUGE part of why I still go to see their amazing creativity.
I did manage to get an epic picture with Hayden Christensen (Anaking Skywalker / Darth Vader), who had his own section upstairs due to the staggering amount of people who came to see him. This was a smart move as there was absolutely no way to squeeze the experience in downstairs.
