The Rescue of the Baby Cobra Chickens

In Canada, there exists a fragile truce between the Canada Geese and us, but today it may have strengthened. My Mother and I were out hunting for some public art that we couldn’t locate near the BMO Theatre near Olympic Village in Vancouver, Bc, Canada, and it is not unusual in this area to see many Canadian Geese. Some people say there is more Goose poop on the ground than there are people in the whole province. I think they may be right.

We wandered down an alley, giving the Geese and their goslings a wide berth so as not to incur their wraith. Towards the end of the path, there appeared to be a commotion. Numerous adult geese were around a water foundation, and around and around, a bunch of goslings were swimming. While it was initially adorable, it soon became clear they were unable to get back out again. Too small to jump from the water to the ledge. The adults seemed frantic, and soon a collection of people gathered around.

There were some plastic signs for cyclists on a nearby path to slow down, so initially we tried to wedge those into the water in hopes they would jump up. The adults appeared to stow their usual murderous intent and let us get closer as we tried new ideas. Not long after, someone brought down a large cutting board with a handle. Another gentleman used those plastic signs to herd the babbies to the board, and they assisted out. One by one, they were plucked from the water and ran over to the adults.

As I sit here now, I wish I had photos of them being helped out, perhaps a little video, but a wonderful thing happened. Everyone around was just in the moment, helping them out. Not one onlooker or helper had their phone out, including me.

How often these days do any of us get to live in the moment?

Now, with kids being kids, I think this won’t be the last daring rescue. Keep an eye out. Help keep the peace.
