When I was but a young man, this was a very big deal in my life. Major characters like this didn’t die. Even stranger was that DC (though I have often questioned the poll’s legitimacy as I doubt they had both issues, alive or dead, ready) let the audience decide if Robin was to live or die at the hands of the Joker. I was lucky enough to get a copy of the issue and smart enough to put it away. Now, so did a lot of other people, so even though it’s a 9.0, its value is around $19 to $50 USD. However, that is not why it’s special to me. It was just that brief period of my comic reading life that is so vivid with this issue.
It was lost for more than 15 years. I had sent most of my old comics to my mother’s place, as I had nowhere to put them. We searched those boxes and everywhere else, at the time, I could think of. Then, late 2024, when I was packing up to move, I discovered it, in the back corner of my bedroom closet under a few large books. I knew I had to send it away to CBCS, more to be protected than graded, but was very surprised it got a 9.0 when I was expecting a low 8 or high 7.
I may not be able to retire early on this one, but it’s a big part of my childhood restored, and perhaps that’s better? I’m kidding. I would rather retire. But still. I’m happy.
