In a genre that is more miss than hit, Frogman is most certainly mostly a miss. The idea is okay, as any folklore monster is a decent topic for a picture like this. However, when the lead of our adventuring trio is deeply unlikable, you have a steep hill to climb. After a long, tedious buildup, I will give them the finale, which was well done. It’s over the top and crazy but somewhat redeeming.

When he was young, Dallas (played by Nathan Tymoshuk from Lady Dynamite) went on a trip with his family and saw a mysterious frogman. Now a freeloading deadbeat manchild, he ropes in a friend and an ex-girlfriend (likely due to the whole freeloading deadbeat manchild thing) to go back to where it all started to prove he really saw the legend.

Frogman strikes me like they devised the ending first and had to kill enough time before they could get to it. Not uncommon for a found footage movie, but it should be possible to make that opening more enjoyable. The problem is that our primary character of Dallas is an asshole. A complete loser. I didn’t care about him, and if his excuse for being like he was that no one believed him, he needed therapy. His companions are not much better.

So the ending. Not to spoil, but it’s pretty crazy, and the more I think about it, it’s only marginally redeeming after all. It’s goofy, really, really goofy and not scary or disturbing in the least. However, if you’re a fan of bizarre monster movies, I recommend skipping to the 3/4 mark of the movie and then watching. You’re not going to miss anything.
