I had the opportunity to go to Fan Expo this year in Vancouver after missing last year’s event due to illness. It has helped restore my faith in fandom, and I’ll explain why. Fandom, to me, is about people coming together, it’s about inclusivity and acceptance that everyone likes different things. Now it is also true that fandom also has a deeply toxic side but I believe the core is intact.

Fan Expo is a shining example, a massive conference room full of people dressing up as whatever character they please, being who they are and no one judging them. Everyone’s just there to have a good time and express themselves. It does not matter if you’re there for Star Wars, Anime, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings or whatever… it’s just “Welcome to the party, we’re glad you’re here.”

The highlight of my visit was getting a very good seat to see the Bruce Campbell panel, and it was amazing to be that close with great sound and view. Later that afternoon I got one of the best photos of my life with a photo op with the legend himself.
