Disclaimer: This should not be read by Conservatives, MAGA or hard-core delusional Synderverse fans. You’re failed attempt to disrupt a hopeful, joyful film is over, and the new DCU is here. If you don’t want to see it because Superman has gone “woke” then congratulations, you are what’s wrong with this world, and we’d like you to leave.
I never thought this was possible. First, we had the failed reboot with Superman Returns, featuring a creepy stalking Superman who is more of a mannequin than a person. Then came the dark times. Slow motion, afficando Zack Snyder appeared. He cast one of the most charismatic actors, Henry Cavill and made him dour, moody, dark and super cranky. The world didn’t need an uplifting Superman. Instead, we got a fight to the death stopped because his and Batman’s mothers had the same name in the worst scene in cinematic history. Then, after failure after failure, the slow motion button was adjusted, and a new era was allowed to begin.
Our story begins with Superman already being Superman (played by David Corenswet from Pearl and Twisters). He’s in a life and death battle with a villain that gets the best of him. Lex Luthor (played by Nicholas Hoult from Nosferatu) unleashes his plan to rid the world of Superman forever. I’ll be a little more vague about specific plot points than usual; you’ll need to experience it for yourself.
Neither Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, nor Justice League understood the character. Here, Corenswet is the hero the world needs right now. Sure, he’s Superman, but he gets knocked down in this one. As powerful as he is, he is no God, nor should he be. I do agree, perhaps he was knocked down a little too often, but this is a very minor complaint.
James Gunn’s love for the character shines through here. There are numerous little details sprinkled throughout the film. I think this one captures the flying of Superman the best out of any of them. In fact, the cinematography here is the best of any Superman film. One little touch I liked was that Lex’s girlfriend’s name was Eve Teschmacher, a nod to Miss Teschmacher from the original 1978 film.
A concern early on for me was that there seemed to be a lot of characters in the movie. I wanted to see a Superman movie, and Gunn manages to pull it off; this is Superman’s movie, period. No one, not any member of the Justice Gang, Lois, etc, steals the spotlight.
The DCU steps into the spotlight with solid footing. Doing everything right in this one that Marvel is doing wrong. I’m no Marvel hater, but their cookie-cutter approach to the films needs to change.
The real Superman is back. Finally.
